Digital equine Ultrasound
- EDGE Imaging

Dr. Kaufman ultrasounds with the latest in equine ultrasound technology: The EDGE by Sonosite. With its multiple probes, the EDGE can examine many structures of the horse's anatomy. This includes, but is not limited to, joints, SI ligament, croup, shoulder, abdominal cavity, reproductive organs, cervical vertebrae and Temporal Mandibular Joint.

Ultrasound imaging is an invaluable tool for assessing soft tissues structures and can be used for hard tissue (bone) structures as well. Traditionally, equine veterinary ultrasound is used for diagnosing digital flexor tendon injuries and assessing reproductive status. With advanced imaging techniques an ultrasound exam allows us to diagnose and treat many musculoskeletal injuries that would only be found through MRI or scintigraphy (nuclear scan).

With advanced ultrasound techniques we can image the following areas previously stated:

  • Distal Front Limb - Foot, pastern, and fetlock joint
  • Middle Front Limb - palmar fetlock, metacarpus and tendons, carpus, and carpal canal
  • Proximal Front Limb - forearm, elbow, and shoulder
  • Distal Hind Limb - foot, pastern, fetlock, and metatarsus
  • Middle Hind Limb - hock
  • Proximal Hind Limb - stifle and thigh
  • Neck and Thoracolumbar Area
  • Lumbosacral Area and Pelvis

Digital equine Radiography

Digital equine radiography is a new development in equine veterinary practice. Digital radiographs, or digital X-rays, capture images digitally on a special plate using a regular X-ray machine. The plates save the images and transfer them to a computer where they are stored and can be viewed immediately. Digital radiographs offer many advantages over conventional X-rays: resolution of image is superior; radiographs can be enlarged to reveal problems that might not be seen using traditional X-ray technology; they reduce exam time as each equine radiography image is captured, verified, and clinically reviewed in seconds; and owners or buyers receive on-site diagnosis.

Endoscopy & Gastroscopy

We are equipped with a fiber-optic endoscope for diagnosing disorders of the larynx, pharynx, and adjacent structures. We provide gastroscopy services (stomach scoping) to allow the stomach to be visualized internally for the presence of gastric ulcers, irritations and other abnormalities.
